US Open 2022: Medvedev advances steadily after beating Rinderknech in three sets

meRussian Daniil Medvedev advanced steadily to the third round of the US Open on Wednesday, beating France’s Arthur Rinderknech 6-2, 7-5, 6-3.

Medvedev, number one in the ATP ranking and current champion of the tournament, needed two hours and thirteen minutes to knock down Rienderknech, number 58 in the world, in the first confrontation between the two.

The Russian, champion this year in Los Cabos, has two victories in three sets in New York, after debuting with a 6-2, 6-4 and 6-0 against the American Stefan Kozlov.

Medvedev was very solid on serve, canceling all three break balls conceded to his rival. He has twenty wins in his last 22 games at the US Open.

In the third round, Medvedev will face the Chinese Yibing Wu, number 174 in the world ranking, the first player from his country capable of winning at least one game in the ‘big’.

The Russian will be a clear favorite against Wu, but he has on the horizon a possible round of 16 meeting with the Australian Nick Kyrgios, who struck him down in the first round of the Masters 1,000 in Montreal.

“Sometimes it’s not easy to play at 10 pm, although it’s something I’m used to. It’s important to find a way to play good tennis quickly,” assured the Russian at the end of the match, on an Arthur Ashe court that was already semi-deserted.
