Pablo Prigioni is the new coach of the Argentine national team
Less than 24 hours before the start of the AmeriCup — American continental competition for national teams — the Argentine Basketball Confederation has had to improvise a change in its bench. After the surprising resignation of the previous coach, Néstor That Garcia, Pablo Prigioni is the one chosen to sit on the bench during this tournament and the next qualifying windows. That is to say, he will be the minimum selector until next February. After the imminent Copa de las Américas, the next big event in Argentina is the 2023 World Cup.
This will in no way affect the position Prigioni currently holds as an assistant with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The one who was a legend of the national team as a player faces this new adventure with enthusiasm. “My feeling for the National Team is very great. Players and staff are focused on giving the best of each one of us in the tournament that lies ahead »he declares in his presentation. Argentina will debut on Saturday against the US Virgin Islands.
It will be Prigioni’s second chance as head coach after his experience in Baskonia. There he barely lasted a few months until he was dismissed. After such disappointment, two years passed until he joined the Wolves discipline, a staff in which he has operated since 2019.
