John Jenkins leads USA to another win

The United States completed their two-game sweep in Window 4 of the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Americas Qualifiers after putting on a shooting clinic in a resounding 95-77 win over Colombia

Colombia played with determination until the end, outscoring the United States 27-25 in the fourth quarter, but the Americans never wavered and stood their ground. This loss ended Colombia’s three game winning streak in the Qualifiers after they defeated Chile and Brazil in Window 3 and Mexico in the first game of Window 4.

Colombia reduced their deficit to five points and made it 31-26 with a couple of minutes left in the second quarter, but the United States finished the first half strong with a 14-6 run behind four 3-pointers, which effectively put the game out of reach.

John Jenkins once again turned out the lights, scoring 26 points on an efficient 8-of-14 from 3-point range, with three of them coming in the fourth quarter. His eight 3-pointers are the most by a United States player so far in the Qualifiers.

DaQuan Jeffries and Langston Galloway also chipped in 14 points apiece, as Jeffries shot 4-of-7 from 3-point range and Galloway hit two 3-pointers off the bench.

Similar to their first Window 4 game against Uruguay, the USA unleashed another onslaught from 3-point range, this time taking 17 of 34 shots from beyond the arc, while Colombia only converted 4 of 13. USA also held a lead of +13 in total rebounds (41-28).

Colombia came into this game averaging the most points per game in the paint (38.3) in the Americas Qualifiers and they continued that trend tonight with 42. The attacking duo of Juan Tello and Jaime Echenique combined for 18 points all near the basket.

The United States is now 7-1 in Group F and has a two-game lead over Brazil, Mexico and Uruguay, who are 5-3, while Colombia fell to 3-5 in the group. The United States and Colombia will meet again in the next window on November 14.
