The Real Club Tenis de San Sebastián adds an ITF appointment to its veteran men’s tournament starting on September 25

Professional women’s tennis will have a place in San Sebastian for the first time from September 25 to October 2. Led by Anabel Medina, a former professional tennis player, and the company Tennium, the first edition of the ITF arrives at the Real Club de Tenis, a tournament that will distribute nearly 60,000 euros in prizes and that aims to establish itself as one of the great events of the sporting autumn in our territory as the men’s tournament already is, getting closer to its centenary. Undoubtedly, some of the best rackets have passed through the courts of Ondarreta, in their day promises and today consolidated tennis players in the men’s circuit.

Anabel Medina, director of the tournament, declares that “it is a great illusion that women’s tennis continues to grow and the Real Club de Tenis de San Sebastián is a perfect place to carry out this event that we want to become a benchmark. In the Basque Country there is a great passion for tennis and for sport in general and I encourage everyone to come and watch matches and support the young promises. I am convinced that it will be a real success and I hope that the tournament will be consolidated and that, thanks to Tennium, the Club and the institutions, it will be able to grow over the years».

This event will become the second project in which Anabel Medina and Tennium collaborate. Its first great success was the BBVA International Open in Valencia, a tournament that after a first edition as ITF80 in 2021, went up in category to a WTA125 in 2022. This synergy has found in Donostia, the perfect setting to continue promoting women’s tennis and consolidate in Spain an international ITF circuit with the aim of becoming another tournament on the WTA calendar.

Parallel to the competition, different activities will be developed for children and adults in a tournament that aims to be an example of sustainability.

The San Sebastián Open has the support of the San Sebastián City Council, the Provincial Council and the Basque Government, as well as entities such as this newspaper.

Tickets, at popular prices, can be purchased now on the tournament website.
