Bosnia and Herzegovina celebrate their first EuroBasket victory since 2015 (95-85)
Bosnia and Herzegovina started EuroBasket 2022 in the best possible way by defeating Hungary 95-85 in a crucial Group B opening match, the Balkan team’s first win at the continental event in almost seven years.
With high caliber teams like France, hosts Germany, Lithuania and EuroBasket 2017 champions Slovenia also in the group, the stakes were high in what many might consider a must-have match. Dzanan Musa and Jusuf Nurkic led the way for Bosnia and Herzegovina with 19 points apiece as Bosnia recorded its first EuroBasket victory since an 86-84 overtime win against Israel on September 7, 2015.
Inflection point: After Hungary led for most of the first half, the game was tied 56-56 midway through the third quarter when Bosnia and Herzegovina put together a 17-5 surge to lead by 12 points. Hungary closed within 80-78 with 6 minutes remaining, but the Balkans delivered the knockout blow with 10 straight points to take a double-digit lead with 3 minutes remaining.
TCL Man of the Match: Dzanan Musa stood out throughout the game with 19 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and no turnovers in 29 minutes of play.
Statistics don’t lie: Bosnia and Herzegovina dominated the glass with a 42-34 lead, including 17 offensive rebounds. Also, they only committed 10 turnovers in the match.
The final result: After an ideal start to the EuroBasket, followed by a day of rest on Friday, Bosnia and Herzegovina will face hosts Germany with a chance to jump to a 2-0 draw in Group B. Hungary, meanwhile, will have a day rest to regroup from the disappointment of the opening day defeat and will look to pick up their first win over Slovenia.
